JOHN KENNEDY (conductor) has led acclaimed performances and premieres worldwide, of opera, ballet, orchestral, and new music. Presently serving as Guest Conductor in Residence at Oberlin Conservatory, he has been artistic director of Santa Fe New Music since 2001, and led New York’s Essential Music from 1988 to 2001. Notable engagements include the Zurich June Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, Kanagawa Arts Festival, New York City Ballet, The Santa Fe Opera, and Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Kennedy has led premieres by many of the leading composers of our era and has composed over eighty works himself, including opera, orchestral, chamber, and experimental works which have been performed throughout the world, including recent concerts at the Colorado Music Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, Melbourne Arts Festival, Tokyo Summer Festival, and New Music New York. Kennedy’s work was selected as the official U.S. entry at the ISCM World New Music Days in Sydney this May. He has been commissioned by numerous organizations, including Sarasota Opera for the opera The Language of Birds and The Santa Fe Opera for Trinity. CDs of his work are available on the Albany, ERM, First Edition, Mode, and Monroe Street labels. He is the director of Spoleto Festival USA’s Music in Time series and served as conductor for the American premiere of Pascal Dusapin’s opera Faustus, the Last Night for the 2007 festival. A DVD of Kennedy and the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra in the American premiere of John Cage’s One11 and 103 was released in 2007.
